Psychologist: High Resilient stat and maybe he can help with bad relationship.
VIP, Tv star, showgirl, etc...: good leader (everybody follow him because he his famous) and high morale
Bricklayer: very strong and very good and fast at barricading

Love the psychologist idea. That would be a perfect fit for turtling...granted, he may be ultimately useless for any function, but simply as a way of calming and bringing together people, he would be a vip.

Not sure about the star...that could go either way (imagine being trapped in a house with a political news commentator whom you have completely different views on and see as someone whom lead people in the wrong direction..)
Could be fun to deal with though

A couple things for the preexisting professions:

Musician: Give "Play Instrument" as an available order...(Also question: My musician tried to play guitar while idle, but his friend with a solid green line took it and hit him in the head giving him a concussion...why did that happen?)

Athlete: Give "Exercise alone/with" as an available order...

Firefighter: Give bonus to combat with Fireman's Axe.
Police Officer: Give bonus to combat with Pistol/Silenced Pistol.
Mechanic: Give bonus to combat with Crowbar/Wrench.

I like the idea of giving bonuses to combat with some of the quieter weapons...to the point where if the right profession is using an upgraded weapon...it's very effective...almost as good as guns, but without the shotgun multiple attack ability. P.S. - Add chainsaws to the game please, loud but devastating!

Also, maybe have the professions connected with the buildings so that if you have a surgeon with you, he has a key to get into the hospital or knows a back way in...

Surgeon: Hospital
Police Officer: Police station
Mechanic: Factory
Librarian: Library
Teacher: School
Professor/Engineer: University

It's a small town after all, so it might be nice to make it feel like the team knows the place...a police officer with you would know exactly where the guns are kept in the police station and you would hardly have to search for them. You could also just add more descriptions like, "Ted searched through his desk and found..." "While cleaning corpses Nancy realized one of them had been her boss, she never liked him anyway!" "As they left the school, Maria took a long look at the place she had spent the last ten years working, she tried not to imagine what had happened to all the children in her class."

That reminds me: Are there child zombies?

Anyways, enough awesome ideas for now...RELEASE MORE INFO ABOUT HOW THE GAME CALCULATIONS WORK, PLEASE!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Note that some professions can provide intrinsic location bonuses to combat and searching (if you have a police officer, you'll search the police station faster), while others are important for some dilemmas (eg, the librarian in a library will make the 'hidden knowledge' dilemma far easier).

Your musician shouldn't be getting whacked by a friend (or it should be very, very rare!). We'll fix this in the next patch.

AHA!
That is almost like an update...a patch is being worked on...so the project isn't abandoned.

hooray for information!!!

So...will there be a psychologist consideration for careers?

Nope, definitely not abandoned - the update will be released very soon. And by soon, I mean imminently.

The new patch doesn't add any new occupations, but it includes a redesigned the custom occupation editor so you can have more control over your custom occupations with respect to tasks and orders.

Yes, much better than requesting a cup of water...give us the hose and let us fill our own bloody cups :)
So, this thread then is ultimately not for a suggestion to the devs, but the community suggesting things to each other...brilliant.

Another reason I'm loving seeing the custom occupation creator getting more work: it lets us players/modders add our own ideas without forcing them on everyone else. Modding is a HUGE part of what keeps a game being played many years after its release, IMO (just ask Bethesda).

Incidentally, I personally love the idea of getting stuck with a 'useless' actor/celebrity... but who rocks in creating distractions and actually raises everyone's morale just by being present!

Very true. We also need which are the skills for the current occupations, having more guidelines to create balanced (or not) professions. I've read 50 points to make a "balanced" one, but there are many paramilitary skills and it gets weird for non-action occupations, like teachers, burocrats and taxi drivers (to name a few...).

Still talking about occupations, do zombies have their ones? Are some of them better at breaching or defending than others? Do they have ages too? I mean... having a custom "soldier" occupation will make appear a lot of very strong zombies in my game?

I might have missed it and not doing it write, trying to make some of my ideas (and others ideas from here) with the occupation creator but not seeing any show up in the game.  I've tried to create custom survivors as well but don't haven't run into any of them in the game either.  I've been playing the scenerio were you start with 1 survivor.  Which brings in another question, are all the survivors pre-existing or are they randomly made as needed?

The occupations I'm trying to make and would like to see offically added are:

Waitress: good social skills and good cleaning (is there a way for it to be waiter if male instead?)
Soldier: good assaulting, breaching and patrolling
Criminal: good breaching, collecting and searching

Soldier: Separated from his convoy stumbles into the town low on ammo, armour in tatters and food. Fighter, searcher, scout, hardy, strong, not good at practical tasks I.e barricading and modifying

C.E.O: On holiday in the small town, when shit went into the fan he took cover in a house finding a group of survivors. A people person, great at working things out and planning, bad at everything physical.

Vietnam veteran: Hes been retired for to long, now that hells broken out its time to go back to the good o'l days. Strong Fighter, searcher hardy, slow, Bad eyesight, good with weapons and modifying weapons and making ammo, Can not fair by himself, thought of as the grizzled vet of the group, Nobody questions him... Unless they want to get there ass beat down.

Survivalist: They thought they were ready, they were wrong, now alone they stumble across some survivors. They never thought they would be the only ones, this was not a good sign, all this preparation is going to be ruined... Good with everything apocalypse related, Not good with people or making noise, that's what they learnt from the book eh?

Hope this is good, all [He's] can be substituted with [She's].

I've already modded in criminals and infantry soldier, they seemed oddly lacking. Scientist is also lacking, again a bit strange for a zombie theme.

My custom characters are all taken from movies or tv shows, but these professions cropped up in the early phases. I've put about a dozen in so far.

Hacker (or IT specialist)
Pilot
Criminal (Thief/Robber as a separation?)
Scientist
Infantry Soldier
Commando - Should be very rare, it'd be nice to set a very rare spawn option! They'd be likely to survive however if you think about their traits.
Driver (Could be a Heavy goods driver, a taxi driver, a transporter, whatever the term is in the states)
Teacher - Poor in many areas but able to teach others, by using 3 characters. The teacher, the expert and the pupil. This keeps it more balanced as 3 people are involved, and a preference would be this (buff) would decay over time if it wasn't retrained, not full learning of a new skill just a small buff.

It'd be REALLY nice if criminal and police officer had natural tension, and we could set certain professions to have a dislike or like of other professions, just a small impact nothing major, as it goes out of the window eventually in a zombie situation :D.

Professional fisherman. Might be vastly overpowered though ;)

The list of strong points is pretty long. Pretty much have the following professions in one package: Soldier, medic, carpenter, cleaner and cook plus multiple perks and traits in addition. If you want something done right - send a fisherman!  ;D

Also as a game breaking mega bonus: give a fisherman plenty of rope and he'll make pretty much anything out of it! =)

Yeah, won't be seen in the game but some professions just totally pwn other professions in survivalist environments :)

For those of us who plan to mainly play with custom characters, the original ten jobs are a bit limiting.  I understand they're there to balance stuff out, but it's weird when you want to use a preexisting character that doesn't fall under one of those categories.  So here are some broadly titled jobs that could vary things up a bit:

Entertainer
- Low end on the practical stuff, but is good at building relationships/keeping morale up.  Perhaps they have a higher chance of triggering friendly interactions?

Criminal
- Difficult to build positive relationships with and very distrustful of Police Officers.  Generally good with their hands, and noticeably good at investigate/breach/assault.

Journalist
- Very perceptive of their surroundings and the people around them , are a "people person", and good at investigate/breach.  Comparatively more adventurous than a librarian.

Student
- Something to represent a non-specialist.  Average across the board.
